Cocos Island
May 1- May 2, 2012
The Diving
Cocos Island, Costa Rica is known as one of the best big animal dive sites in the world. The diving around this remote, pristine island is simply outrageous. One of the most outstanding phenomena in Cocos are the enormous congregations of silky sharks who often mix with hammerheads to form colossal shark schools. It is also common to encounter whitetips, manta rays, eagle rays, yellowfin tuna, and possibly whale sharks. Among Cocos Island’s many attributes is a startling degree of biodiversity. The island’s waters explode with life: countless whitetip sharks, schooling hammerheads, mantas, jacks, silvertips, Galapagos sharks, dolphin, and sometimes sailfish. Cocos is also home to 27 endemic fish species including the exotic red-lipped batfish. Cocos Island is an important rookery for several species of ocean birds including the red-footed booby, black noddy, great and magnificent frigate birds. This island is unlike any other place in the world and must be visited to be believed!
