Located in the Eastern Tropical Pacific, 300 miles southwest of Cabo Blanco, Costa Rica, lies the famous Cocos Island Marine Park. A rugged and incredibly beautiful island, this World Heritage Site is the crown jewel of Costa Rica's many National Parks. Cocos Island has an irregular coastline, which makes estimation of land area more a matter of opinion than a surveyor’s science, but it is roughly five miles by two miles.

The Diving

Cocos Island has earned the reputation as being one of the best, if not the best, big animal dive destinations in the world. Upon arrival you are afforded the opportunity to be surrounded by hundreds (maybe thousands) of schooling hammerhead sharks. Schools of tuna, mantas, various billfish, dolphin, bait balls, scores of marble rays the size of coffee tables, and a million or so schools of big eye jack and other species are considered regular sightings while diving around Cocos. There is always the chance of swimming with an enormous whale shark as well! Although it's hard to pry yourself away from the underwater experiences, the terrestrial side of Cocos presents a remarkable opportunity for hiking the islands jungle trails, visiting the various blue-footed booby rookeries and other exotic bird species, or simply relaxing in the bathing pools created by hundreds of waterfalls cascading from the steep cliffsides. This is truly a “must-do” dive destination for every serious diver, especially for photographers and videographers.
