Traveling to the Banda Islands, a.k.a the Spice Islands, opens a portal to the Asian world. Hindu andMuslim cultures envelop the traveller and offer sensory treats that are rich in novelty to a Westerner. Once onboard the AAII, the ship's staff treated us like royalty. The food was healthy and abundant; we ate like Hobbits, five meals a day. The underwater experience was like a walk through an oceanic Garden of Eden. The diversity of
corals and fish was outrageous. I recognized many forms- they have "cousins" elsewhere...but in the waters of the Spice Islands of James
Cook it is Mardi Gras time. The "macro world" is a delight, with nudibranchs, flatworms, frogfish hiding in plain sight, Mandarinfish courting and displaying their gaudy rainbow of colors, scuttling cuttlefish and parading lionfish. Bring your reef saver and magnifying glass and like Alice, you'll fall through to another world. I did.
