After a long but comfortable journey, we arrived at our tropical island paradise. Matana Beach Resort on Kadavu Island in southern Fiji had a relaxing, laid-back atmosphere. Gentle breezes and mild temperatures were a pleasure above water while a reef teaming with life greeted us below!
Whether it was the tasty local cuisine made in traditional Fijian style over in a fire pit (Lovo) and served on leaves, the waterfalls that left even the most experienced hikers gasping for breath, the wine tasing, massages, sea kayaking, hiking, rare Fijian birds, celebrating New Years with a visit to the local Church, enjoying the traditional Meke dance ceremony, tasting Kava, pirates horseshoes or a romantic walk on the beach, there was something for everyone to enjoy.
Underwater, we were treated with several species of anemoniefish, lionfish, nudibranchs and beautiful reef vistas. The resort provided a boat and guide to take snorkelers to the more beautiful and secluded reefs in the area. The highlight for the divers was a trip over to the other side of the island to dive with mantas. The mantas didn't disappoint and these dives ended up being some of our favorite dives ever! The gentle giants were amazing, swooping and gliding through the water with majestic grace.
We were all a little sad to leave when the time came and all agreed that we needed more time there. Thank you to the staff at the resort, dive guides and local villagers that made us feel at home and always welcome.
Fiji was an amazing experience. Thank you to all those who joined me on this wonderful vacation. I hope we can all travel together again soon!
