Located just 8 miles across the Bahia de Mujeres from Cancun, Isla Mujeres is only 5 miles long and a half mile wide at it's widest point. Historically Isla Mujeres is a fishing village and has retained its tranquil and charming atmosphere. The Spanish explorer, Cordova, discovered the abandoned island in 1517. There were numerous Mayan sculptures of women present, hence the name, Isla Mujeres, or Island of Women. Most of the island can be explored on foot, by bicycle, by golf cart, or via moped. Turquoise waters and white, sandy beaches describe the idyllic beauty found on this island.

The Diving

The diving around Isla Mujeres is best described as low key and relaxing! Some dives are drift dives though the majority are easy and laid back. Majestic stands of elkhorn coral frame the reef canyons as big schools of creole wrasse, brown chromis, and grunts swim around the coral heads. There are numerous swim-throughs and overhangs to enjoy as well. Visibility is typically excellent, 80-100ft being fairly common. One of the unique features encountered while diving is the underwater museum. Several statues have been placed underwater to serve as artificial reefs. These structures provide sanctuary for a plethora of marine creatures and make for an interesting and unusual dive experience!
